Former speed boat champ convicted of arson in SD

A former power boat racing champion has been acquitted of one count of attempted murder, but convicted of arson and making criminal threats for trying to burn down the homes of his stepdaughter and ex-wife.

The El Cajon jury deadlocked Wednesday on two other counts of premeditated attempted murder for Eugene "Mickey" Remund, who drove hydroplanes in the 1970s and '80s and won the Thunderboat Regatta.

San Diego County prosecutors have until a hearing on June 10 to decide whether to retry Remund on those counts.

Remund set his ex-wife's garage on fire last June. Gale Remund was not hurt and called her daughter, who awoke to find her home on fire as well.

A defense attorney says Eugene Remund was found on the ground near his stepdaughter's house, after he shot himself in the head with a nail gun.
